Jefferson and Virginia Legislature Narrowly Miss Capture

Cornwallis's cavalry under John Graves Simcoe and Banastre Tarleton conduct a raid on a supply center at Point of Forks on the James River and the temporary seat of government at Charlottesville. Simcoe succeeds in destroying the supplies but Tarleton captures only seven members of the legislature because Jefferson and the assembly were warned of Tarleton's approach with only moments to spare.
