Cornwallis Arrives in Virginia

Charles Cornwallis's army arrives in Virginia from the Carolinas and combines with the forces under Arnold (his superior officer, William Phillips, dies on May 13) at Petersburg. More British troops arrive shortly thereafter, which gives Cornwallis the confidence to chase American forces under the Marquis de Lafayette, who recently arrived with an army to counter British operations in Virginia.
