John Paul Jones defeats HMS Serapis
In the battle that turns Jones into the greatest naval hero of the War for Independence, he displays considerable spirit and skill in commanding the Bonhomme Richard, a converted merchant ship, against the 44-gun Serapis off the Yorkshire coast. When asked for his surrender, Jones is alleged to have replied "I have not yet begun to fight."
