Washington Defeated at the Battle of Long Island, New York
In the first pitched battle of the War for Independence, George Washington's army is soundly defeated by William Howe and forced to evacuate Long Island, which allows the British to begin siege operations against Brooklyn Heights in their campaign to take New York.
