Dunmore Driven Out of Virginia

Having situated his forces at Gwynn’s Island, Virginia, on May 26, Dunmore's ragged band of British regulars, loyalists, and former slaves are largely driven off the island by American artillery. Leaving behind many of the freed slaves, Dunmore eventually makes it to New York on August 14.
