Virginia Creates a Commonwealth

In Williamsburg, the delegates to the First Virginia Convention adopt a new constitution that establishes a republican government, in which the lower house of the assembly is dominant, the judiciary is a separate branch, and the powers of the governor, limited to one year terms, are exceptionally weak. They then choose Patrick Henry as the first governor. He is re-elected in 1777 and 1778.
