South Carolina's House of Commons Votes £1500 for John Wilkes

To help pay for John Wilkes' legal costs, the South Carolina House of Commons votes to give his supporters £1500, which sets off the most serious dispute in the colony's history. Because of strident opposition from the British government, all legislative work grinds to a halt. The disagreement effectively ends royal government in South Carolina in 1771
