Pitt Leaves Office
After the Cabinet allows Bute to take over peace negotiations with France and refuses to attack Spain, Pitt resigns on October 5, leaving Bute in effective control of the government. George III makes it official when he names Bute First Lord of the Treasury and prime minister in May 1762.
